For the cover of its June issue, Vanity Fair sent legendary photographer Annie Leibovitz to a galaxy far, far away. OK, that’s not quite true. In reality, Leibovitz went to London’s famed Pinewood Studios to photograph the cast and creative minds behind one of the decade’s most anticipated movies, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”
Leibovitz, who just might have the most awesome job on the planet, got to photograph director J.J. Abrams, stars Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley and Han Solo himself, Harrison Ford, for the magazine. Lucky for us, Vanity Fair also sent along a videographer, who provided a behind-the-scenes look at the photo shoot while also giving a sneak peek at the movie’s sets and costumes.
So what secrets has the Vanity Fair team learned? For starters, Driver plays villain Kylo Ren, who yields the much-buzzed-about three-pronged lightsaber, Oscar-winner Nyong’o is a CGI character named Maz Kanata and that everyone involved knowsthere needs to be relatable characters to go along with all the special effects if the film is to succeed.
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” will hit theaters on Dec. 18.
