HODINKEE has gone through a beautiful evolution over the years. What started as a digital publication by Benjamin Clymer has turned new leafs, adding in a tech component with the informational components of their website and mobile app, beefing up their HODINKEE Shop offerings, and even entering the print world with the launch of HODINKEE Magazine. They’ve even been able to work with some of the best watch brands in the world to craft limited edition watches that you just won’t find anywhere else. Their latest collaboration is with Laurent Ferrier as they’ve reworked the Traveller to create an extremely rare and must-have travel watch.
If you’re in the market for a proper GMT that doesn’t compromise, then the Laurent Ferrier Traveller for HODINKEE is your watch. It takes the original Traveller and brings it down to a more minimalistic feature set. The original Laurent Ferrier Traveller is the brand’s version of a Patek Philippe 2597, powered by their in-house Galet Micro-Rotor with a dual timezone feature that showcases a home-time window at nine o’clock, sub-seconds at six o’clock, and date at three o’clock. For HODINKEE, we see that the seconds sub-dial at six o’clock and the date window at three o’clock are both removed while the home-time display stays right at nine, is set once and never adjusted.
The dial itself is made from deep blue enamel in the center and surrounded by a circular satin-brushed blue outer ring that slopes toward a matte white railroad minute track. Polished titanium makes up the casing, a first in Laurent Ferrier’s history. The diameter comes in at 41mm though its design has it looking much smaller. Dig deeper and you’ll see domed sapphire crystals on both the front and the back. Laurent Ferrier’s watches are known for their natural escapement tecnology, a rare sight in the world of watchmaking today. The movement seen here in the Traveller is LF’s caliber LF230.02 which features off-centered micro-rotor in 18k gold with pawl-fitted, uni-directional winding, equipped with “silent block” shock absorption.
In the end, we get a limited edition (just 15 will be made, each individually number on the back) watch that perfectly balances exquisite design with technical craftsmanship.
