Audi Activesphere: The Future Is Augmented Reality Navigation

Audi revealsed the Audi Activesphere at the Celebration of Progress on January 26th, 2023. The fourth in the ‘“sphere’” concept car series imagines a sleek all-terrain crossover married to modern tech in the form of AR2²  and a holistic digital ecosystem.

Like all the other cars in the ‘“sphere’” series, the Activesphere runs on an electric PPE platform, co-developed by Audi and Porsche, with a 370-mile range 100.0-kWh battery, front and rear axle electric motors with a combined output of 436 hp and 531 lb-ft of torque. PPE also brings onboard an 800-volt electrical architecture, allowing the battery to go from 5 to 80 percent in under 25 minutes.

The four-door crossover coupé sports a versatile body, a see-through interpretation of the “Singleframe” grille, a variable ground clearance, roof-integrated ski rack, large 22-inch wheels, and an ‘“active back’” split tailgate feature. The ‘“active back’” feature allows the Sportback rear of the Activesphere to open into a cargo bed  (“active back”) at the touch of a button.

Inside the cabin, the minimalist interior features a fold-away steering wheel and dashboard in autonomous driving mode, a full-width sound bar, hot and cold beverage storage in the center console, and a black and red interior.

There are no touch screens on the Activesphere’s dash. Instead, the car receives sports the  “Audi dimensions” system. The entire interior uses augmented reality with four headsets stored in a console in the roof, allowing occupants to engage with the AR interface inside and outside the cabin, which gives users access to vehicle status, navigation, and entertainment through eye tracking technology, while gesture control allows interaction with the virtual controls.

Though residing in the realm of concept vehicles, the Audi Activesphere gives us a glimpse of what’s possible for the future of driving.
