New Balance first introduced the 2002r in 2010, followed by a massively successful revival in 2020. Designer Yue Wu created the ‘refined future’ collection that featured layering panels of ripped-up suede on the uppers and got the ‘Protection Pack’ nickname. Buoyed by several collaborations and new colorways, the 2002r became an instant classic.
The newest iteration of the New Balance 2002r ‘Protection Pack’ plays around with monotone finishes on the uppers and borrows elements from the brand’s popular MR2002 outdoor footwear. The New Balance 2002r model comes in a modified mule silhouette, and features cut-up suede overlays, rugged nubuck leather, ripstop nylon uppers, toggle laces, impact-absorbing midsoles, Stability Web ABZORB technology cushioned heels and arch support, and N-ergy shock absorbing outsole.
The new 2002r ‘Protection Pack’ variants come in four variants: the Dark Moss with blacktop and covert green, the Eclipse with magnet and black, the High Desert with dark moss and black, and the Sandstone with turtledove and gold metallic colorways.
The New Balance 2002r ‘Protection Pack’ new colorways retail for under $160, and are now available on the New Balance website and flagship stores.
