Rare 1980 BMW M1 Is Available at Auction Now

In the exclusive realm of automotive rarities, the 1980 BMW M1 stands as a true gem, encapsulating the essence of luxury and performance. With only 453 BMW M1 examples produced over two and a half years, this classic masterpiece is poised to make waves at the Bring A Trailer auction.

The provenance of this 1980 BMW M1 reads like a captivating chapter in automotive history. Completed in June 1980 and originally delivered in Europe, the M1 found its way to the United States in 1987, where it has been under the devoted care of its current owner since 2016. This custodian orchestrated a meticulous mechanical and cosmetic refresh, culminating in the car’s showcase at the prestigious 2017 Hillsborough Concours d‘Elegance in California.

Dressed in a white finish adorned with meticulously painted BMW Motorsport tri-color stripes, this M1 is a visual spectacle. Noteworthy exterior enhancements include a Procar-style front air dam, pop-up headlights, dual locking fuel caps, and rear window louvers, creating a harmonious blend of classic aesthetics and performance-oriented design. The hand-painted ‘Design W. Maurer’ signature below the right tail light adds a personalized touch.

The cockpit features adjustable seats trimmed in opulent blue leather, providing a luxurious and comfortable driving environment. The color-coordinated dashboard, center console, door panels, and carpets contribute to an immersive driving experience that seamlessly combines classic design with modern comfort. The inclusion of air conditioning, power windows, and a Becker Europa cassette player reflects a thoughtful integration of contemporary amenities.

At the heart of this automotive masterpiece is a robust 3,453cc M88 inline-six engine, a powerhouse boasting features like Kugelfischer-Bosch fuel injection, six individual throttle bodies, and dry-sump lubrication. The ZF five-speed manual transaxle, coupled with a limited-slip differential, ensures a dynamic and engaging driving experience. The unequal-length A-arms, Bilstein height-adjustable gas shock absorbers, coil springs, and unassisted rack-and-pinion steering contribute to the M1’s performance pedigree.

The Carfax Vehicle History Report, available as public documentation, begins with the car’s importation to the US in 1987 and details its provenance until 2016. It shows no accidents or other issues, along with its history in Michigan and Ohio. Also included in the lot is a collection of tools, a first-aid kit, and a reproduction owner’s manual, along with a fire extinguisher and literature.

This particular 1980 BMW M1, Lot #133620, is set to command attention on Bring A Trailer. At the time of writing, bidding has reached $278,000, with four days remaining in the auction. Please visit the Bring a Trailer website for more information and to place a bid.
