Meta recently unveiled its Orion Glasses, which the company claims are ‘the most advanced pair of augmented reality (AR) glasses ever made.’ With its large holographic displays and the integration of contextual AI, Orion was designed to bridge the physical and virtual worlds.
Meta has long invested in developing extended reality (XR) devices, such as its widely popular Quest virtual reality headset. However, unlike the Quest headset, which immerses users in digital environments, the Orion glasses are designed to superimpose digital interfaces into the physical world using highly advanced lenses. Meta boasts that the Orion glasses provide the ‘largest field of view in the smallest AR glasses form to date.’
The Orion features miniaturized technology, which took Meta several years to accomplish. The lightweight and stylish glasses, designed in partnership with Ray-Ban, deliver incredible spatial experiences comparable to those found in bulk VR and MR headsets. The glasses will also feature AI capabilities by offering object recognition abilities, 3D visualizations, and conversational AI interactions, similar to chatbots such as ChatGPT.
The Orion glasses are still in the prototype stage, with a few models made available to Meta employees and select external groups for testing and feedback. Although customers can’t get their hands on one anytime soon, Meta promises that it will likely hit shelves in the future. For more information, visit the Meta website.
