Omega Releases 2024 Edition For Their Speedmaster Anniversary Series First Omega In Space Timepiece
On October 3, 1962, astronaut Wally Schirra wore the Omega Speedmaster CK2998 during his Sigma 7 mission. This marked Omega’s unofficial debut in space, as he personally chose to wear the watch without official NASA approval. Omega continues to honor this legacy of the First Omega In Space with its 2024 anniversary edition.
The new edition, reference 310.30.40.50.06.001, is a modern Speedmaster with a vintage charm. Its CVD-coated blue and gray dial resembles CK 2998 watches from the 1960s. Moreover, the alpha hands and hour markers are filled with vintage-look SuperNova. Despite being less luminous than modern versions, the yellow tone enhances the watch’s classic look. The watch also includes vintage logos on the dial and the crown.
The 2024 Omega Speedmaster First Omega in Space proportions maintains a vintage vibe, measuring 39.7mm wide, 13.4mm thick, and 48mm lug-to-lug with a lug width of 19mm. The caseback features a Seahorse medallion and engravings that read ‘SPEEDMASTER,’ ‘THE FIRST OMEGA IN SPACE,’ and ‘OCTOBER 3, 1962.’
Under the caseback is the Omega Calibre 3861, a hand-wound chronograph movement with a Co-Axial escapement that introduced Master Chronometer standards, a free-sprung balance wheel with a silicon hairspring, strong anti-magnetic properties, and other advancements in 2019.
The watch is offered with a steel bracelet, a black-grained calf leather strap, or a brown, non-grained calf leather strap. All versions feature a solid caseback, sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment, and 5-bar water resistance.
The leather strap models are $7,500, while the metal bracelet is $7,900. Visit the brand’s website for more details.
