De Tomaso has revealed the production specification P72 to mark its 65th anniversary. It is inspired by the 1965 De Tomaso P70, a collaboration between Alejandro De Tomaso and Carroll Shelby.
The P72 was first revealed as a concept at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed and now emerges as a production vehicle. It pays homage to the 1960s, an era where vehicles were made with purpose and engineered for feel rather than algorithms.
The P72 features a full carbon fiber body, available in a range of classic hues or as a visual carbon exterior. At its core is an all-new carbon fibre chassis, crafted entirely from 4×4 twill weave. The unibody monocoque is formed from a single, uninterrupted piece of carbon fibre with no bonded sections. This maximizes stiffness and reduces weight, and sets a new standard for structural purity. Suspension geometry, mounting points, and chassis balance have all been fine-tuned from the ground up to deliver a refined driving experience.
Inside, the car avoids modern digital features in favor of mechanical simplicity. Drivers are greeted by a cabin defined by analogue dials and bespoke switchgear instead of digital screens and infotainment. An exposed linkage shifter is present at the center, which is a polished, suspended metal sculpture that connects the driver to the six-speed gearbox. The cabin is finished with hand-stitched leather and individually milled aluminum components, available in bead-blasted, hand-brushed, or hand-polished finishes.
Under the hood is a hand-assembled 5.0L supercharged V8, developed exclusively for the ‘P’ platform. With bespoke forged internals and an all-new De Tomaso supercharger, it produces 700 hp and 820 Nm of torque. The powertrain is paired with short gear ratios for immediate, responsive, in-gear performance rather than top-speed figures. A push-rod suspension system with 3-way manually adjustable dampers furthers the classical driving feel.
‘The P72 was our promise to faithfully revive a historic marque,’ says Norman Choi, CEO of De Tomaso Automobili. ‘This first production-specification vehicle embodies everything we stand for: a mechanical soul, timeless beauty, and a driving experience that rises above modern convention.’
Only 72 examples of the P72 will be commissioned, each crafted with bespoke finishes and materials. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in late 2025. For more information, visit the brand’s website.
