Ferrari introduces the 296 Speciale, a mid-rear plug-in hybrid berlinetta that joins the exclusive lineage of special version models. This luxury vehicle is engineered to redefine the driving experience and set a new standard for the marque’s production range and the segment as a whole.
The 296 Speciale has astonishing capabilities regarding its agility, turn-in responsiveness, and stability. It takes the performance of the 296 GTB to a whole new level by maximizing the potential of its plug-in hybrid architecture, featuring a rear-mid 120° V6 twin turbo engine, an electric motor, a short wheelbase, and innovative dynamic control systems. The drivetrain sets a new record for a rear-wheel-drive production Ferrari, delivering an incredible combined power output of 880 hp, 50 more than the 296 GTB.
Ferrari’s motorsport expertise contributes to the engine’s performance, with features such as titanium connecting rods, reinforced pistons, a lightened crankshaft, and a Formula 1-inspired knock control system. All these elements boost the V6 to 700 cv, 37 more than the standard model.
The electric motor now delivers 180 cv in extra boost mode, allowing a new transmission strategy to be introduced, which utilizes additional torque during shifts to shorten shift times, further enhancing the driving experience.
Aerodynamically, the 296 Speciale generates 435 kg of downforce at 250 km/h, which is 20% more than the 296 GTB. This was made possible thanks to the aero damper integrated into the front bonnet and the vertical fins on the rear bumper. Additionally, the new spoiler includes a new actuator control strategy that shortens transitions between Low Drag and High Downforce configurations by 50% and adds a new Medium Downforce configuration for greater rear-end stability at high speeds.
The car’s weight has also been reduced by 60 kg compared to the 296 GTB, using carbon fiber and titanium for various components. Moreover, the car’s suspension, electronic control systems, and tyres have been fine-tuned for optimal performance.
In terms of design language, the exterior adopts a more aggressive, motosport-inspired design. The new Verde Nürburgring exterior color, a vivid green that emphasizes the sporting spirit of the car, was developed specifically for the 296 Speciale. The front features a suspended splitter, a wing-shaped element that visually widens the car, deep air intakes, and prominent louvers on the bonnet. The rear also includes distinctive elements such as protruding side wings and a compact tail design. A broader black strip integrates the tail lights, while the tailpipe is set above the diffuser. The dark-painted roof and flying bridge theme add to its sporty appearance. New five-spoke forged wheels complete the exterior.
Inside, the 296 Speciale follows the design principles of other special versions. It’s stripped back for performance, featuring an extensive use of carbon fibre and Alcantara to reduce weight and emphasize a race-focused cabin. A new one-piece carbon fibre door panel integrates the speaker system. The center tunnel is also in carbon fibre, which the console is set in.
The 296 Speciale is built for those in search of a vehicle with extraordinary performance. For further details, visit the brand’s website.
