Ferrari has revealed a new roadster wearing the GTS (Gran Turismo Spider) designation. The Ferrari 296 GTS follows the V6-electric 296 GTB that launched in 2021.
With no mechanical changes to the new model, it still runs on a gasoline-electric plug-in hybrid powertrain and is powered by a 3.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V6 linked to a 7.5kWh battery pack. The 296 GTS churns out 818-HP and 545-lb-ft of torque, going from 0 to 62mph in less than 3 seconds with a top speed of 205mph. It is built with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The first thing we will notice is the retracting roof of the new model, a two-piece panel that moves in 14 seconds at up to 28 mph. Its decklid has been reshaped to fit the mechanism that lets in fresh air to the cabin. However, the real changes can be seen within through the redesigned engine bay and an optimized exhaust resonator system.
Its interiors are specific to the 296 GTS, though. Changes to the seats and parts are immediately noticeable, but the minimal accents added to the trim behind the headrest come with a roofless design. Most interior parts have been optimized to channel air into the cabin and minimize turbulence at higher speeds.
Compared to previous roadsters, the new GTS has improved A- and B-pillars to remove the unwanted torsional rigidity and bending stiffness.
Drivers will be able to customize their roadsters with the Assetto Fiorano package that comes with a carbon fiber body kit, adjustable Multimatic shock absorbers, and even more carbon fiber bits throughout the vehicle. Not only that, a special livery inspired by the 250 Le Mans and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires will also be up for grabs.
The Italian manufacturer will start production in the coming months, and pricing is yet to be announced. Head on to the Ferrari website for more information.
