Son Bunyola Mallorca, 16th-Century Manor House Turned Luxury Hotel

Located on a 1,300-acre Son Bunyola estate in the Serra de Tramuntana, the Son Bunyola Mallorca is the most recent addition to the estate owned by Sir Richard Branson. Once a 16th-century Finca, or manor house, the new luxury hotel joins the three existing villas, Sa Punta de S’Aguila, Son Balagueret, and Sa Terra Rotja.

Created by Mallorca’s Gras Reynés Architecture Studio in partnership with local interior designer Rialto Living, the historic Son Bunyola Mallorca has been restored and designed with traditional and local materials in mind and retained all the original features important to the history of the local area. The original towers in the main house were redesigned into two Tower Suites with views of the vineyard and the mountains beyond, the former olive press now houses one of two restaurants, and the terrace has been fitted with a pool.

Getting to Son Bunyola Mallorca starts with the arrival at Palma international airport in Mallorca, followed by a 40-minute drive to the estate. The island has direct air connections from various European cities by scheduled and charter airlines. Though hiring a car is recommended to both get to the estate and explore the island, the hotel can arrange for airport transfers and taxis.

The Son Bunyola is a sprawling estate with activities available for unwinding and exploring. Some activities available include guided cycling tours, historical walking tours, hikes along the Unesco world heritage-listed Tramuntana mountains, tennis at the Terra Rotja with private tennis coaching available, personal training services, golf at over 20 golf courses on the island, kayaking, yachting and sailing, spa treatments, pilates or yoga sessions, or a dip at the outdoor heated pool. For more culinary activities, there’s the Pa Amb Oli Tasting during Spanish night every week, a paella cooking class, wine tastings, and local vineyard tours.

Further afield, excursions to the traditional Mallorcan villages of Banyalbufar and Esporles are also possible, as well as trips to other smaller enclaves and villages, each with something to offer.

Dining at the Son Bunyola Mallorca is a cultural experience with authentic Mallorcan dishes. Headed by Chef Samuel, much of the produce served in the two restaurants is grown in the estate’s gardens and orchards. Sa Terrassa, the Hotel’s main restaurant, serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner and offers dishes using home-grown and seasonal ingredients. Sa Tafona, open only in the evenings, is housed inside what used to be the manor’s historic olive press, it offers guests its own take on tapas, as well as a selection of traditional Spanish dishes for sharing. For those so inclined, more intimate private dining for two in several locations around the hotel can also be arranged during the stay.
