y+M design office have completed work on the ‘House on Stylobate’, a country house located in Nara, Japan. The house is distinguished by its two styles of cladding, with the spaces spread between two floors. The designers used a combination of contemporary as well as traditional Japanese aesthetics. Extended curving white walls create partitions to outdoor gardens and nooks, whilst supporting the structure. The ground level is comprised of a Japanese-style tatami room, master bedroom, bathroom, and private courtyard. Communal spaces are based on the second level, with five protruding house-shaped volumes wrapped in timber shingles making up the kitchen, living room, free space, and sheltered balcony.
