Cartier Continues Legacy with Cartier Santos-Dumont Rewind And Cartier Santos-Dumont Lacquered

Cartier unveils its latest creations at Watches & Wonders Geneva 2024, continuing its longstanding tribute to the legendary Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont. Among the highlights are the exquisite ‘Cartier Santos-Dumont Lacquered’ collection and the intriguing ‘Cartier Santos-Dumont Rewind,’ both offering a blend of classic design and contemporary flair.

The bond between Alberto Santos-Dumont and Louis Cartier dates back to 1904 when Santos-Dumont approached Cartier with a unique request: a timepiece that would allow him to check the time while flying without letting go of the controls. This request gave birth to the world’s first purpose-designed wristwatch, characterized by its sleek geometric lines and practical square-shaped case. Fast forward to 2018, Cartier reintroduced the Santos-Dumont model, captivating enthusiasts with its timeless elegance.

The new trilogy of Santos-Dumont models presents a refreshing take on the iconic design. Crafted in precious metal cases and adorned with vibrant lacquered details. Unlike its predecessors, the latest editions boast lively metallic tones of olive green, peacock blue, and taupe, complemented by translucent lacquered dials with a sunray brushed finish. The absence of Roman numerals adds a contemporary touch, replaced by stylish Arabic numerals that harmonize with the case color.

Beneath the surface, the Cartier Santos-Dumont models house the caliber 430 MC. This Cartier-branded version of Piaget’s ultra-thin, manual-winding 430P caliber ensures reliable timekeeping with a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour and a power reserve of 38 hours.

Meanwhile, the luxury watchmaker continues to push boundaries with its latest release, the Cartier Santos-Dumont Rewind (Ref. WGSA0102). This distinctive timepiece challenges convention with its innovative design and functionality.

At the heart of the Cartier Santos-Dumont Rewind is its captivating feature: the reversal of time. Unlike traditional watches, where time progresses forward, the Santos-Dumont Rewind’s dial presents Roman numerals in reverse order, offering a novel approach to timekeeping. This unconventional display, coupled with the reverse rotation of the hands, adds a layer of intrigue and playfulness to the watch.

Crafted from platinum, the watch exudes understated elegance with its brushed and polished case, accented by a ruby cabochon in the beaded crown. The carnelian dial, made from a semi-precious red stone, adds a touch of sophistication to the timepiece. Each watch comes with a semi-matte brown alligator strap and a platinum ardillon buckle, ensuring a comfortable and secure fit.

Powered by the caliber 230 MC, a modified version of the 430 MC movement, the Santos-Dumont Rewind delivers precision and reliability. With a 38-hour power reserve and water resistance of up to 30 meters, this watch is as practical as it is stylish.

Limited to just 200 numbered pieces, the Cartier Santos-Dumont Rewind retails for $38,400 USD. The new Cartier Santos-Dumont Lacquered models, on the other hand, range from $15,000 for gold to $21,100 for platinum. For more information, please visit the official Cartier website.
