Chevy’s Silverado EV RST Is A Great-Looking, Versatile All-Electric Pickup That Knows No Bounds

Words and photos by Atif Kazmi for Por Homme

It’s about a 175-mile drive from the central part of NJ to Washington, D.C. Mostly highway, the trek usually has some congestion so it’s all about how you time it. My timing? Horrible on most days but I got lucky with navigation showing all green for my 3-hour journey. The car of choice? A beautiful, black Chevy Silverado EV RST that’s equipped with everything you might want for a mini road trip.

From NJ to DC (and back) on a Single Charge

I’ve done this drive in an EV on several occasions. Each time, I had to stop at a rest area to keep range anxiety at bay. Most EVs can’t comfortably handle a 2-300 mile stretch and so many of them have an issue estimating accurate consumption. But when you’ve got SuperCruise on board and Google Maps telling you exactly what percentage of your battery will be remaining when you get to your destination, all that stress goes out the window. My journey started with about 440 miles of range and Google Maps telling me I’d have 56% of that remaining once I arrived in DC. With just nine miles left to go, I was actually 6 minutes ahead and my remaining battery was still set to be 56%. I could’ve made the entire round trip on a single charge which would be a first for me as well.

All-Electric Performance, Aero-Centric Design

With 754 hp and 785 lb-ft of torque coming from its all-electric dual motors, the Silverado EV RST is really an impressive pickup. How it manages the power and its battery range is even more impressive. So much of the credit goes to its design. The bold front fascia can be more akin to a wide, fast SUV than a pickup while sculpted body lines help to give its. Modern and aerodynamic aesthetic. That aero design helps contribute to a 440-mile range that’s well managed with minimal loss, through city or highway driving.

Work Meets Leisure Versatility

So what are we doing with all that range? Anything we want. With the Silverado EV RST, innovation meets versatility with a string of features that open the RST to more experiences and uses than most EVs on the market. The RST can tow up to 10,000 lbs. and can Super Cruise while doing so. The midgate design allows for owners to extend the cargo bed into the cabin, expanding the bed length from 5.9 feet to over 10 feet when needed. Longer items can join the journey without compromising passenger space while there’s a massive frunk for extra secure storage. Transitioning from work to leisure feels more seamless than ever before.

Cabin Technology

Step inside the Silverado EV RST and you’re met with a clean, tech-centric interior. Everything’s about convenience and function with a 17-inch infotainment touchscreen and an 11-inch digital cluster working together to deliver intuitive access to vehicle controls and information. Of course, taking a load off is always welcomed and GM’s Super Cruise technology with hands-free driving assistance does just that.
