2024 Maserati GranTurismo Trofeo Is The Nucleus Reshaping Every Car In Italian Brand’s Lineup

Words and Photos by Atif Kazmi for Por Homme

A few months back, we got a chance to sit down with Klaus Busse, Maserati’s Head of Design. A passing comment that really stuck was about how the new GranTurismo is sitting at the center of all that the brand creates. Its agility, versatility, and pedigree all help to shape the other cars in the Italian marquee’s stable. If you want more space but don’t want to compromise on performance and nimbleness, look no further than the Grecale. If you want something more aggressive and don’t mind giving up rear seats in the process, then in comes the MC20. Beyond that, of course, is the track-only MCXtrema

The Maserati GranTurismo roars back into the scene after a four-year hiatus and pulls the icon back into Grand Tourer conversation in the process. Offered in two trims, the range-topping Trofeo model pairs the car’s familiar silhouette with a captivating ‘Cofango’ style, blending bonnet and fenders. Constructed on a new 65% aluminum chassis, its modular design accommodates both internal combustion and battery electric versions. The car’s exterior, although familiar, exudes a timeless charm that pays homage to its Italian roots.

Step inside, and the Trofeo’s modern interior reveals a mix of elegance and functionality. The 12.3-inch central display hosts a suite of audio connectivity features, including Apple CarPlay, complemented by an 8.8-inch touchscreen for drive controls. The cabin, while spacious, does not shy away from high-quality materials, featuring aggressively bolstered leather seats, and intricate seat stitch patterns. There’s always a debate about piano-key material on touch points but when fingerprint-free, it’s a sleek detail.

Beneath the lengthy hood, the Trofeo packs a punch with the MC20-derived Nettuno engine—a 3.0-liter V6 Twin Turbo producing 542 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. The acceleration is exhilarating, launching the car from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.3 seconds. The ZF eight-speed automatic transmission is meant for effortless driving but also makes room for an engaging driving experience, especially in the sport-oriented settings.

Thanks to that MC20-derived Nettuno engine, the GranTurismo Trofeo can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.3 seconds. And though its performance figures speak for themselves, the 2024 Maserati GranTurismo Trofeo boasts a set of compelling advantages that contribute to its allure.

The steering system of the Trofeo deserves special mention, The GranTurismo’s sharp steering tethers between responsiveness and direct control. Despite being electric power steering, it manages to convey a sense of connection with the road, enhancing the overall driving experience. The stability and handling of the car are further elevated by its all-wheel-drive capability and the innovative Vehicle Domain Control Module (VDCM), showcasing Maserati’s commitment to precision and performance. We spent most of our time with the GranTurismo during colder weather and never once did we lose confidence in the tourer’s abilities.

The 2024 Maserati GranTurismo Trofeo has a lot to appreciate but a few things that definitely take a little getting used to. With new-generation Maseratis now offering a horizontally-mounted dual-screen infotainment layout, the piano-key material push-button shifter sometimes gets lost. When looking at just how far the Maserati brand has come over the years, the evolution of its cabin is something we’ve appreciated and will look forward to seeing evolve further in the years ahead.

Starting at $205,000, our Trofeo’s as-tested price of $223,120 includes optional extras like the Adas base package, Sonus Faber sound system, and Tech assistance package. Our test car, a GT550AU24 GranTurismo Trofeo MY24, features a striking Nero ribelle exterior, a luxurious interior with full-grain leather, and 20/21-inch forged machined wheels. With a plethora of optional packages and enhancements, the Trofeo aims to cater, inviting those seeking a personalized and premium driving experience.
