Apple is launching its new personal intelligence system, Apple Intelligence, which will roll out next month with iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1. The system utilizes generative models and personal context to provide valuable and relevant intelligence.
Apple Intelligence integrates with Apple silicon to understand and create language and images, automate tasks, and simplify everyday actions while protecting users’ privacy and security with Private Cloud Compute. This takes an incredible step forward for privacy in AI, where it doesn’t store users’ data but only utilizes it to fulfill requests. Apple will release the first set of Intelligence features next month, with more to come later.
The first features include Writing Tools for refining words across apps like Mail, Notes, Pages, and third-party apps. The Memories feature in Photos allows users to search for specific videos, find specific moments in clips, and create memories by typing descriptions. Photo editing is also made easier with the new Clean Up tool, allowing users to identify and remove distracting objects in the background of a photo.
Users can record, transcribe, and summarize audio in the Notes and Phone app. Apple Intelligence also provides summarized notifications across apps and prioritizes essential notifications, messages, and mail, allowing users never to miss anything important. The Smart Reply feature in Mail offers suggestions for a quick response and identifies questions in an email to ensure everything is answered.
Siri is updated to become more flexible, with a redesigned interface and deeper device integration. Users have the fluidity to switch between text and voice using Siri to improve everyday tasks. Siri also received richer language-understanding capabilities to handle stumbles in speech and maintain context across requests. Moreover, Siri can now answer more in-depth questions about features and settings, allowing users to learn everything about how to use their devices.
More Intelligence features will be released later this year, including Image Playground, which allows users to create playful images in moments. Image Wand, which can make notes more visually engaging, and the ability to create original Genmoji by typing a description or selecting a photo. Siri’s capabilities will also increase, with the ability to draw on personal content, gain onscreen awareness, and take more complex actions. Users will also be able to access ChatGPT’s vast knowledge.
Apple Intelligence will roll out as a free software update, available on iPhone 16 models and the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPad, and Mac with M1 chips. It will first launch in U.S. English, with additional English-language support and more languages and platforms coming later this year and over the next year.
