Apple Wallet offers a range of conveniences, including storing various cards in one place and eliminating the need to carry cash. They’ve elevated the user experience further by allowing virtual licenses and IDS to be stored, a feature available in various states, and now California has joined the list.
Californians can now add their driver’s licenses and state IDs to the virtual wallet on their iPhones or Apple Watch. They join a growing list of states that recognize digital IDS as equivalent to physical ones, including Arizona, Colorado, Hawaii, Ohio, Georgia, and Maryland.
This launch will be part of California DMV’s broader mobile driver’s license (mDL) pilot program, which provides a more modern approach to personal identification, offering increased security, convenience, and sustainability. The introduction of virtual licenses and IDS marks a significant step in replacing actual wallets and will likely expand to other states and regions in the near future.
