Leica Camera AG Celebrates 70 Years Of Leica M

A new era in photography began seven decades ago when Leica launched the M3. Released in 1954, the Leica M3 set a new standard with its distinct rangefinder and M-System. This year, Leica M is celebrating its 70th anniversary, and to mark this milestone, the photography company is releasing a limited special edition, the ‘Leica M Edition 70.’

The 70th-anniversary edition is a unique collector’s item, limited to 250 sets. This platinum-plated model combines the classic M3 design with advanced Leica M-System technology. It’s an excellent investment in the future of analog photography equipped with a Leica M-A camera, Leica APO-Summicron-M 50 f/2 ASPH. lens, and a Leicavit M fast winder.

To further honor the legacy of the M-system, Leica will publish the ‘Leica M’ book, which will have over 250 pages detailing its history through iconic photographs, essays, rare archives, and an overview of all M-Cameras produced so far. Additionally, an anniversary exhibition of historic Leica M-Camera models will be open to the public on November 6th at Leica Camera AG’s headquarters in Wetzlar.

Leica will also release three more versions of the Leicavit M fast winder for manual film transport in addition to the special edition. These include black-painted, glossy black-painted, and silver-chromed variants, which will be part of the regular series production. The Leicavit M replaces the bottom cover and allows photographers to capture up to two pictures per second without taking their eyes off the viewfinder.

Celebrating 70 years of the Leica M honors a camera that has shaped photography and captured some of the most iconic moments in history and those in everyday life. The anniversary edition’s timeless design and craftsmanship make it highly sought after by photographers and collectors.

The ‘Leica M Edition 70’ is priced at €22,500.00 and will be available in selected Leica Stores at the start of 2025. The ‘Leica M’ book will be available for €49.00 at Leica Stores, the Leica Online Store, the LFI Online Store, and select authorized dealers from the 5th of November. The different variants of the Leicavit M fast winder can be purchased for €1,050.00 in the first half of 2025 at Leica Stores and their online store. For more information, visit the brand’s website.
