BMW i8 Mirrorless Concept Unveiled at CES 2016

BMW has shown off an i8 that swaps conventional mirrors for three cameras being fed into one smart display. The display sits where an old school rearview mirror once did, showing a composite wide-angle image.

BMW has shown off an i8 that swaps conventional mirrors for three cameras being fed into one smart display. The display sits where an old school rearview mirror once did, showing a composite wide-angle image. Features we’ve already seen from the German automaker like blind spot detection are shown via yellow warning icons. The side cameras aren’t flush with the body, but instead are housed in what look like slimmed down mirror housings. This is most likely about keeping a fluid aerodynamic design and is more welcomed than what we’ve seen from other automakers and their mirrorless designs. Though there’s a lot more to think about before this concept goes into a production model, BMW’s direction here is a welcomed sign of things to come. Enjoy the looks in the gallery below.
