Move over NASA, SpaceX has plans to surpass you as the leaders in space exploration. Elon Musk, the Tesla and SpaceX founder, has outlined plans to send humans to mars within the next decade or so. “For what?”— you may ask. In his “Making Humans An Interplanetary Species,” speech given at the 67th International Astronautical Congress in Guadalajara, Musk explains how he believes humans have the ability to colonize Mars. The accompanying video, which has surpassed 2 million views in 24 hours, was presented describing the “interplanetary transport system.” Though Musk didn’t detail the financial structure of the Mars project, he did explain that after the first couple of voyages to the red planet, the price for a trip to mars would be roughly $200,000 per individual. The clear lack of funding and government support, for now, is the only thing holding back SpaceX’s vision of the future. The possibility of humans living on the mysterious planet is beyond the capacity of our imagination, yet Musk believes this goal can be accomplished sooner than later, so time to start saving!
