Singer Announces Dynamics and Lightweighting Study Turbo Services for Porsche 964

Singer, the California-based Porsche 911 restoration and modification specialist, just announced their Dynamics & Lightweighting Study (DLS) that incorporates turbocharging (DLS Turbo) services. The latest restoration service is offered to enthusiast owners of Type 964 air-cooled 911.

The DLS Turbo restoration services are envisioned with each owner to celebrate the 934/5 Porsche endurance racers of the 1970s and begin with a Type 964 Porsche 911 sent to Singer with the request to carry out a personalized DLS Turbo restoration.

The car is carefully disassembled with the interior and the exterior bodywork removed and all mechanical components detached until the steel monocoque is revealed. After that, the chassis is carefully assessed, cleaned, and strengthened for the next stages of the process.

After disassembly, the Porsche 934 undergoes several processes that include a modified carbon fiber bodywork restoration done to reduce the car’s weight and increase its toughness and a computational fluid dynamics analysis to optimize aerodynamic performance.

How the final bodywork looks depends on whether the owner specifies a track-focused or road-focused bodywork restoration. A track performance restoration comes with a high-downforce rear wing with an adjustable upper element and a track-oriented front fascia with a larger splitter, while a road-focused build will have an aero-optimized rear ducktail spoiler and drag-minimizing road-oriented front fascia. Owners who request to have options for both get a removable front fascia and rear decklid assembly.

As part of the process, the engine gets disassembled down to the engine block before being restored using high performance-optimizing components and modifications that allow the unique 3.8L, 4-valves per cylinder flat-six to use twin turbochargers, with electric wastegates, air-to-water intercooling, and a horizontally mounted, electrically powered fan to reach power outputs over 700 HP at more than 9000 rpm.

Other customization options depend on the owner and can include a rear-wheel 6-speed manual transmission, track-oriented suspension and bespoke dampers with remote adjustment, carbon ceramic discs and lightweight, monobloc calipers for both road and track use, and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 or Cup 2R tires mounted on lightweight front 19” and rear 20” forged magnesium, centerlock wheels.

The cost for Singer’s DLS Turbo restoration services is dependent on the requests by each car’s owner, and only a limited number of restorations will be made.

The results of the restoration and modification service can be viewed firsthand at either the Festival of Speed in the UK from July 13th to 16th or the Monterey Peninsula in Northern California for Car Week in August 2023. For more information, please visit the Singer website.
