‘Sky Ladder’ – A 1,640-Foot Fireworks Ladder by Cai Guo-Qiang

‘Sky Ladder’, the 1,640-foot fireworks display had been a childhood dream of artist Cai Guo-Qiang. The dream was finally realized with this grand dedication to his 100-year old grandmother.   The exhibit consisted of the long fireworks system attached to a white balloon with about 219,000 cubic-feet of helium. It lit up Huiyu Island Harbor in Quanzhou, China in the early morning. ‘[I]t carries affection for my hometown, my relatives and my friends,’ remarks Guo-Qiang. ‘For me, this not only means a return but also the start of a new journey.’  The Sky Ladder display took place at 4:49 am on the 15th of June and lasted two and a half minutes.
