Mercedes-Benz Eyeing EV Charging Station Network to the Tune of $1 Billion

Mercedes-Benz, in cooperation with ChargePoint and MN8 Energy, is planning to spend $1 billion to build an EV charging station network. With a plan to go carbon-neutral by 2039, the German auto maker’s plans include installing over 2,500 chargers at 400 locations scattered across the United States by 2027.

Early designs show a modular charging station layout, a minimum of four DC chargers at each hub, plug-and-charge compatibility, and won’t be restricted to Mercedes’ EVs. Other brands’ electric cars will be able to plug in as long as they are equipped with the proper charger. Mercedes states that chargers will reach charge speeds of up to 350 kilowatts, though the charging costs have yet to be announced.

Mercedes also mentioned that sites will be carefully curated and set up in key cities and urban centers, close to major roads, at participating dealers, in the vicinity of popular retail and service centers, and equipped with surveillance cameras and other security features to provide a safe and secure environment. Mercedes-Benz owners will be able to reserve a spot via the infotainment system and pay for charging with the Mercedes Me Charge service.

Construction for the project is scheduled to start before the end of 2023, with expansions planned to include Europe and China. The global project has an estimated completion date of 2030.

Additional details about this new network of charging stations will emerge in the coming months.
