Instagram Launches Music Account

Instagram has launched a music-focused stream called @music. The account allows users to share not only photos but also lyrics, videos and artist information. The launch was announced by Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom who commented that @music will show a “different side” of popular and up-and-coming artists to Instagram’s users. @music will be updated six times weekly, with updates focused on new unsigned acts, the songwriting process and other music related news. “It means highlighting music photographers, album illustrators, instrument makers and, of course, fans,” says Systrom.

This is not the first time a social media platform has decided to make content about music. In 2013 Twitter’s #music allowed users to see what their friends were listening to and link to apps like iTunes, Rdio and Spotify. Twitter’s effort was unsuccessful and the hype died down after a year. However, we expect that Instagram’s strong following will keep @music around.

The first @music feature is about Roots drummer and Tonight Show bandleader Questlove. The artist discusses his highs and lows and gives advice on DJing. Follow @music on Instagram for more updates.
