French luxury fashion house KENZO unites with Levi’s for a collaborative Fall 2023 capsule collection co-designed by Nigo, KENZO’s artistic director and a long-time Levi’s collaborator. The collection’s ‘real-to-wear’ functionality draws inspiration from Nigo’s extensive archive of original Levi’s workwear pieces in Japan.
The 20-plus collection features jackets, dresses, pants, tees and accessories. Most of the pieces are crafted from premium Japanese Kaihara denim, reflecting Kenzo Takada’s design philosophy. Each archival-inspired piece meets Japanese craftsmanship and tailoring, and sport both the Levi’s Two-Horse Pull emblem and KENZO’s signature logo. Notable details include Levi’s button shanks embossed with KENZO’s Boke flower, Levi’s arcuate stitching on the back pockets, and embroidered KENZO branding.
Highlight pieces include a gender-inclusive Reversible Denim Jacket with a detachable faux fur collar, a Fringe Jacket featuring western yokes, a Levi’s Type II Trucker Jacket from 1967 reimagined in red satin with Boke flower embroidery, a Type II Jacket in a vintage wash with hand-distressing, a gender-inclusive Western Shirt with sawtooth pocket detailing and an embroidered ‘KENZO’ name badge, a classic pocket T-shirt in off-white with arcuate details, rivets, and a graphic on the back, a sleeveless button-down Denim Dress and Denim Overalls in a dark indigo rinse, a 501 1933 jeans in dark indigo with attached suspenders. The collection is completed with a red Western Bandana, blending Levi’s iconography with Maison KENZO’s style.
The KENZO x Levi’s campaign, captured by Japanese filmmaker Umi Ishihara, features the collection pieces with two traditional sansou mountain villas in Kyoto serving as a backdrop. Complementing the film are still images by Mongolian photographer Ryu Ika.
