Grand Seiko Releases USA-Exclusive Limited Editions SBGA507 & SBGA509 Timepieces

Grand Seiko pays tribute to its limited edition kirazuri-themed watches from 2018 by releasing SBGA507 and SBGA509 timepieces. The initial kirazuri-themed pieces were produced to celebrate the formation of the Grand Seiko Corporation of America. Now, the newer models are USA-exclusive limited edition watches to commemorate the symbolic limited variations.

Kirazuri, meaning ‘sparkling painting,’ refers to a technique in Japanese woodblock printmaking that uses mica powder to produce a sparkling shimmer. The limited edition Grand Seiko watches are inspired by the kirazuri ukiyo-e woodblock print, where the dials are finely textured to create a sparking effect. The SBGA509 and SBGA507 timepieces also draw inspiration from the transitioning sky over Lake Suwa. The SBGA509 dial has a dusty rose hue capturing the colors of an early sunrise, while the blue dial of the SBGA507 resembles the evening sky.

The watches also celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Spring Drive Automatic Caliber 9R65, which provides the timepieces with power. The caliber utilizes mechanical, electric, and electromagnetic energy to power the watch, allowing it to achieve  ± 15 seconds per month with a power reserve that lasts around 72 hours. The USA-exclusive limited editions also pay homage to the 44GS case design from 1967 while giving it a modern look featuring stainless steel cases and bracelets.

The USA-exclusive limited editions SBGA507 and SBGA509 will be available at the Grand Seiko website, Grand Seiko boutiques, and select authorized retail partners. Only 300 pieces of each timepiece are produced, and each costs $5,600.
