Apple surpasses RIM as number two smartphone vendor

Usually, not many people care about who number two is, but today’s not your ordinary day.  Research firm Canalys reports that Apple has taken over number two in world sales of smartphones.  17.3 percent is greater than RIM’s 15.2 and Windows Mobile’s 13.6 percent.

The fourth quarter is looking good though for RIM with the Bold, Storm, and Pearl 8220 due to hit the market.  Oh, and just in case anyone cares was wondering about who’s number one, it’s Nokia’s Symbian with 46.6 percent, which is a 21.5 percent drop.
