1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4RM Owned by Steve McQueen Up for Auction at Monterey Car Week

RM Sotheby’s has released details about a storied 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4, purchased by actor Steve McQueen on the set of Bullitt in 1967, that goes up for auction at Monterey Car Week later this summer. It is one of 330 examples manufactured between 1966 and 1968 with bodywork by Scaglietti.

Assigned chassis number 10621, the coupe went through several changes and owners over the years, including getting a coat change from the original Nocciola (‘Hazelnut’) to a Chianti Red, and fitted with a set of Borrani wire wheels and bespoke wing mirror on McQueen’s request, repainted in bright red in the early 1970s when it was owned by Guy Williams, and stored in Conway’s body shop for several years after a rear-end collision, was painted yellow and converted into a N.A.R.T. Spyder in the 1980s, and was given a coat of silver Argento Auteuil paint in the 2000s.

1983 Le Mans winner Vern Schuppan, who later owned the car, wanted to return the 275 GTB/4 to Steve’s 1967 specifications, so it was sent for restoration at Ferrari Classiche in Maranello, Italy. Most of the original parts that were removed during the N.A.R.T. conversion, including the rear glass and chrome surround, the rear deck, and the internal roof buttress metal pressings, were located and reinstalled by Ferrari, and the car was then part-sprayed in its original Nocciola for assessment before it was returned to the McQueen specifications and repainted in Chianti Red.

After its mechanical soundness was proven and tested at Ferrari’s Fiorano test track, this particular 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4RM has been displayed in Ferrari’s official museum and at events like the Villa d’Este Concours d’Elegance.

In 2014, the car sold for $10 million at the RM Auctions sale. This year, RM Sotheby estimates the coupe to sell for anywhere between $5 million and $7 million, excluding auction-related fees. Expect the car to go up on the auction block on August 18th at Monterey Car Week in Monterey, California.
